Seth Gordon’s Baywatch: Beaches Be Crazy

Matt Brody (Zac Efron) is an ex-Olympic swimmer who has aspirations of joining an elite group of beachfront lifeguards led by Mitch Buchannon (Dwyane Johnson). Brody thinks of himself as the be all and end all. He thinks he’s the best thing since sliced bread. He’s arrogant, egotistical and narcissistic. Brody’s casual attitude irks Mitch. When narcotics and a corrupt resort owner (Priyanka Chopra) threaten the bay, Mitch and Matt must put their differences aside for the greater good.  And only by stepping outside of your comfort zone can you be a part of something bigger.

Honestly, this is one more of those Hollywood action comedies that seems to be an art exhibit for beautiful people. This film is the beautiful people’s club and only the devilishly handsome are allowed admittance, and “zero fucks are given.” Unless your name is Ronnie (Jon Bass) who begins proceedings by dropping the film’s first dick gag, internal beauty won’t go very far. From Alexandra Daddario (Percy Jackson) to Zac Efron (Neighbors) to Dwayne Johnson (Moana) to Priyanka Chopra (Quantico), this is a reflection of the LA lifestyle where beauty opens doors and mediocrity closes them.

Laughter is this movie’s goal and it achieves it. After the unsavoury reception from critics and it bombing in the box office, I went in wanting to not like it. I expected to hate it, and never have I been so wrong in my entire life. I haven’t laughed this much since 2016’s Sausage Party. Baywatch is the funniest thing I’ve watched this year. And I’m not squeamish to the monumental assault of penis humour that this has. There are many vulgar jokes and some awkward ones as well. What this film is, is dumb fun and as long as you go in without high expectations you’ll have a good time.

I’ve been following Alexandra Daddario for a while and I make an effort to watch what ever she happens to be in. And for me, she stole this movie. I loved her performance, and her comedic timing is always on point, especially in scenes she shares with Zac Efron.

This is the first live-action performance by Dwayne Johnson I can say that I liked with no complaints. I generally find him unwatchable but this one is a winner. Chopra succeeds as the very dramatic corrupt villain. But her plan is often too difficult to take seriously when even the bad guys are hot. Dammit Baywatch!

The jokes land for the most part, the acting is good and this is one of the funnest cinema experiences I’ve had in a while. From Daddario to Chopra to Efron to Johnson, Baywatch doesn’t try to be anything more than an enjoyable day at the beach. Come on man, why do viewers have to be so serious all the time? This is a fun film with heart and beach bodies. Beers all round I say.
